Reaching the Unreached
On 28 and 29 March 2026, the Green Movement of Sri Lanka distributed essential tourism-related equipment and supplies to small-scale service providers and family businesses across Matale District — continuing its mission to support livelihood recovery among communities devastated by Cyclone Ditwah.
On 28 March, four individuals — among them homestay operators and those engaged in camping-related tourism activities — received the tools and equipment they needed to reopen their doors and resume their livelihoods. For people whose income depends on welcoming visitors, the period following the cyclone had brought not just physical damage, but a painful standstill. These supplies represented more than practical support; they represented a way back.
The following day, in Kahagala, the focus turned to a family-run juice and snack bar — a small business operated with great dedication by two young women. Cyclone Ditwah had taken a heavy toll on their customer base, leaving them to navigate one of the most difficult periods of their lives. The distribution of essential items to help keep their business running was a modest gesture in monetary terms, but a deeply significant one in human terms. It was a signal that their work is seen, their resilience is valued, and their recovery matters.
Livelihoods lost to disaster are never just economic losses. They are dreams interrupted, identities shaken, and futures put on hold. Behind every damaged homestay and shuttered small business is a person who has poured their energy, their savings, and their sense of purpose into something they built from the ground up. Supporting their recovery is not simply a matter of replacing equipment — it is an act of solidarity.
By standing with these entrepreneurs and small business owners, the Green Movement of Sri Lanka reaffirms its commitment to an inclusive recovery — one that reaches beyond emergency relief and into the everyday lives of those who are still finding their footing.
This initiative was carried out under the humanitarian support project titled “Support to Provide Urgent Relief for Victims of Cyclone Ditwah in the Raththota and Laggala-Pallegama Areas of the Central Province of Sri Lanka,” made possible through the generous support of the High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives, via the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives(CFLI).
Every livelihood deserves a chance to recover and thrive. In Matale District, that chance is being restored — one business at a time.
