The EU is currently helping us to improve biodiversity and livelihoods in the KCF. The exercise is ongoing but has already provided us with some pretty unique perspectives on how to balance the social, economic and environment development landscapes in sensitive areas.
These two UN organizations helped in the recovery of damaged agricultural land and the training of farmers through the Green Movement concept of on-site Farmer Field Schools.
One of the most environment sensitized private sector organizations, Arinma helped the greens to rehabilitate some of the damaged mangrove habitats in the Anaiwasala area in Kalpitiya.
With support from BI, the Greens mapped out heirloom genetic resources in three areas of Sri Lanka and identified specific issues related to the human-animal conflict with special reference to the human-elephant conflict.
AusAid supported the GMSL during the post-tsunami crisis to help rehabilitate damaged schools and yet again, in 2018, to rehabilitate damaged agro-wells and establish new ones in the northern province to help in home gardens.
The IUCN has been one our our most trusted supporters over the years. They helped us rehabilitate the Panama Lagoon in the post-tusnami era with one of the best such interventions ever to have been implemented in Sri Lanka. More recently, they helped us help harmonize the human-environment dynamics of the Wankalai lagoon area.
The GEF-SFP and the GMSL have a long history of working together. First the Green Youth Brigade was created in 2005 across the country as well as a green initiative to reduce the fluoride content in water in the north-central province. Next, SGP helped us to optimize the environs and manage tourism on the Pidgeon Island Marine National Park in Trincomalee.
In the post-conflict era, the Green Movement was very concerned that the northern province which had remained toxin-free for decades might become the dustbin of vested interests and commenced a program to enable farmers to continue with their practices and enhance their value. USAID supported a major portion of the program. .
The NDF was the original and staunchest of our supporters from the very inception of the movement right up to the post-war era. During that long period of our friendship, they helped us across our substantive mandate including setting up environmental vigilance groups, legal aid, sustainable agriculture, consumer networking, school programs, disaster management. Although they left Sri Lanka to help those more in need in 2011, we shall always remember them as a true friend.
Oxfam funded the working group on IFI’s watch as part of the policy lobby activities of the GMSL that included monitoring their activities, awareness campaigns, research and legal aid to the victims of development aggression.
The Oxfam Solidarity Group from Belgium has funded the GMSLs water and sanitation projects in the eastern sector of the country in the immediate aftermath of the tsunamis when the water situation is some of those areas was severe due to salt intrusion.
The Sahana Project, based in Maine, USA, used the sister-village concept to find funding for the GMSL’s village building project at Kalametiya in the Hanbantota district which was completely destroyed by the tsunamis.
The Cooperazione Internazionale came forward to support our permanent house building projects in various parts of the country where communities were damaged by the tsunamis, going with the idea of the movement for “whole of community” treatment of problems through a holistic engagement approach.
The Irish humanitarian organization has funded some of our most crucial work in our immediate agriculture recovery program in the district of Hambantota.
