Nurturing New Beginnings: Maternal and Infant Care Items Reach Vulnerable Families in Matale

From 27 to 29 March 2026, the Green Movement of Sri Lanka reached out to some of the most vulnerable members of cyclone-affected communities — pregnant mothers and newborn babies — bringing with them essential care items at a time when they are needed most.

Across the Meddawatta, Madakumbura, Kiwlawadiya, and Rattota areas of Matale District, a total of 37 beneficiaries received maternal and infant care essentials. Among them were 12 pregnant mothers and 25 babies — each at a precious and delicate stage of life, and each deserving of the care and comfort that too many in disaster-affected areas are forced to go without.

The items distributed — bedding, clothing, hygiene kits, baby nets, vacuum flasks, and infant care sets — were chosen with intention. They address the practical realities of early motherhood and infant care: warmth, cleanliness, nourishment, and protection. In communities still bearing the weight of Cyclone Ditwah’s aftermath, these essentials help families navigate one of life’s most critical chapters with greater security and dignity.

“Ensuring that mothers and their little ones have access to basic care items is a small yet powerful act of compassion — one that nurtures not just health, but hope.”

Maternal and infant well-being sits at the heart of every thriving community. When a mother is supported, her child is supported. When a child is given a safe and healthy start, an entire future is shaped. It is with this understanding that the Green Movement of Sri Lanka continues to prioritise the most vulnerable, even — and especially — in the hardest-to-reach corners of the district.

Reaching the unreached is more than a mission statement. It is a promise renewed with every family we stand beside.

This initiative is part of the project “Support to Provide Urgent Relief for Victims of Cyclone Ditwah in the Raththota and Laggala-Pallegama Areas of the Central Province of Sri Lanka,” made possible through the generous support of the High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives, via the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

Every mother and child deserves care, comfort, and a chance to thrive.
