An inclusive and equitable society is equally important for addressing the social, environmental, and economic issues outlined in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Sustainability is sometimes misunderstood to be primarily concerned with the environment, conservation, or energy saving. Transdisciplinary, interrelated “wicked problems” are deeply ingrained in the cultural narratives that shape our perceptions of ourselves, one another, and the natural world. They require a paradigm shift in our way of living, thinking, and acting. While all subject areas and disciplines must incorporate the development of knowledge and awareness of the sustainability issues (SDGs), it is equally critical to nurture the competencies and mindset necessary to bring about the transformative changes needed. Heminda Jayaweera eloquently conveyed this message to the young entrepreneurs and participants at the launch of our Youth-led Green and Inclusive Businesses project.
