On 27 March 2026, the Green Movement of Sri Lanka travelled to the hills of Matale District — to Madakumbura, Meddawatta, and Rattota — carrying something simple, yet profound: clothing for families who had lost so much to Cyclone Ditwah.

More than 200 individuals — men, women, and children — received essential clothing, including frocks, underskirts, sarongs, t-shirts, towels, bedsheets, and napkins. These are not luxuries. These are the quiet necessities that form the fabric of everyday life — items most of us take for granted, but which, in the aftermath of disaster, can restore a crucial sense of normalcy and self-worth.

Disaster relief often focuses on food, water, and shelter — and rightly so. But clothing carries its own weight. A clean set of clothes allows a child to return to school without shame. It allows a parent to face the world with their head held high. It signals to families that their community has not turned its back on them.

“Access to basic clothing is more than a material need — it is a foundation for dignity, well-being, and resilience.”

For the families of Madakumbura, Meddawatta, and Rattota — communities already navigating immense hardship — this distribution was one more step on the road to rebuilding their lives. The Green Movement of Sri Lanka remains committed to walking that road alongside them, reaching those who need it most.

This initiative is part of the project “Support to Provide Urgent Relief for Victims of Cyclone Ditwah in the Raththota and Laggala-Pallegama Areas of the Central Province of Sri Lanka,” made possible through the generous support of the High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives, via the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

Every family deserves warmth, comfort, and care.
