With the generous support of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), the Green Movement of Sri Lanka carried out relief efforts on 28 January to support communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah in the Rattota Divisional Secretariat and Laggala Divisional Secretariat of the Matale District.
As part of the initiative, children from Midland’s Tamil Vidyalayam, Bambaragala Tamil School, Meddawatta Preschool, and Mahalakotuwa Sri Sumana Maha Vidyalaya received educational kits to help them continue their learning during this challenging period.
Support was also extended to vulnerable groups within the community. Essential garments were distributed to persons with disabilities, while ten pregnant mothers affected by the cyclone received clothing and baby care items. In addition, a wheelchair was provided to Ms. Sathyawani, supporting her mobility and enabling greater independence in her daily life.
Alongside these efforts, a medical camp was conducted at Midland’s Tamil Vidyalayam, providing healthcare services to more than 120 people affected by the cyclone from the Nichola Oya Estate, Meddawatta, Dambagolla, Bambarakiriella, and Madakumbura Grama Niladhari divisions. The camp was carried out with the support of the Chief Medical Officer and staff of the Matale District Non-Communicable Diseases Unit.
The relief efforts were further strengthened by the participation of officers from the Rural Development Board of the Rattota Divisional Secretariat, police officers from Rattota Police Station, the Welfare Officer of the Midland State Plantation, the Principal of Midland’s Tamil Vidyalayam, and the Vice Principal of Bambaragala Tamil School.
These relief activities were implemented by the Green Movement of Sri Lanka with the support of the High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).
