As part of the project, “Enhancing the Climate Resilience of Vulnerable Communities in Laggala-Pallegama through Sustainable Agriculture, Socioeconomic Empowerment, and Inclusive Policy Advocacy” (2025–2027), the Green Movement of Sri Lanka successfully conducted a Master Trainer Program last week at the Illukkumbura Temple in Laggala.

This initiative marks an important step in strengthening local leadership and building long-term climate resilience within vulnerable rural communities. The program was held under the leadership of Mr. Suranjan Kodithuwakku, Chairperson of the Green Movement of Sri Lanka, and was guided by experienced training consultants Mr. Amal Sanjeewa and Mr. Hemachandra Udumulla.

Six Master Trainers representing the villages of Illukkumbura, Kahagala, Puwakpitiya, Poththatawala, and Dammantenna successfully completed the training. The selected participants were equipped with practical knowledge and leadership skills to serve as resource persons within their respective communities.

The training covered a wide range of topics designed to promote sustainable livelihoods and environmental responsibility. Key areas included:

  • Social mobilization and community engagement
  • Leadership development and grassroots organization
  • Sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices
  • Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification processes
  • Soap production as an income-generating activity
  • Organic liquid fertilizer production for eco-friendly farming

By developing a network of trained Master Trainers, the program aims to ensure that knowledge and skills are continuously shared at the village level. This approach not only strengthens community ownership but also supports long-term adaptation to climate-related challenges.

The project is implemented by the Green Movement of Sri Lanka with the generous support of the High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

Through partnerships, capacity building, and inclusive community engagement, this initiative continues to empower rural communities in Laggala-Pallegama to build sustainable livelihoods while enhancing their resilience to climate change.
