Reaching the Unreached
On 27 and 29 March 2026, the Green Movement of Sri Lanka distributed educational kits to children from Early Childhood Development Centres and a primary school across several areas of Matale District — continuing its commitment to supporting education in communities hit hardest by Cyclone Ditwah.
The distribution spanned six areas: Ambanganga Korale, Rattota, Maoya, Dewaladeniya, Hattotaamuna, and Puwakpitiya. On 27 March, young learners from two Early Childhood Development Centres in Ambanganga Korale and Rattota were among the first to receive their kits. Their smiles were a quiet but powerful reminder of why this work matters. Two days later, the effort continued as children from seven preschools across Maoya, Dewaladeniya, and Hattotaamuna, along with students from a school in Puwakpitiya, received their own sets of learning materials.
For the school in Puwakpitiya, the distribution went a step further. In addition to the standard kits, the school was gifted with A4 paper and cardboard file covers — modest in cost, but meaningful in what they make possible. For children trying to find their footing again after a disaster, having the right tools to learn without interruption can make all the difference.
Access to basic learning materials is about more than pencils and notebooks. It is about restoring a sense of normalcy, stability, and possibility for children whose lives have been disrupted. When a child has what they need to sit down and learn, it sends a message that their future still matters — that the world has not forgotten them.
By equipping these young learners with the right tools, the Green Movement of Sri Lanka takes another meaningful step in nurturing their potential and reinforcing the educational foundation they need to thrive in the wake of disaster.
This initiative was carried out under the humanitarian support project titled “Support to Provide Urgent Relief for Victims of Cyclone Ditwah in the Raththota and Laggala-Pallegama Areas of the Central Province of Sri Lanka,” made possible through the generous support of the High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives, via the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives(CFLI).
Every child deserves the chance to learn and grow. And in Matale District, that chance is being given — one kit at a time.
